The Creative Act: A Way of Being

Rick Rubin
T3 no Open Library recordgoodreads

Not a how-to book. Rubin's meditations on creativity are deliberately non-prescriptive — he is describing a posture toward work rather than a process. For musicians, the sections on surrender, on listening to the work rather than imposing on it, and on the difference between taste and judgment are particularly sharp. Best read slowly, one or two fragments at a time.

The best books on creativity
“Rubin's book reads more like a collection of meditations than a how-to manual, which is either a limitation or its central point. His argument that the creator's job is receptivity — tuning into something that already exists — positions the book firmly in the philosophical strand and makes it a useful counterweight to the discipline-first books on this list.”
