The Estee Lauder Companies

Consumer goodsbeauty and personal care

Estee Lauder sells prestige cosmetics and fragrance through department store counters, specialty retail and airport travel retail, with brands including Clinique, MAC, La Mer and Jo Malone bought or built over sixty years. Gross margins run around 72 percent, the family keeps voting control through Class B shares, and the concentration of growth in Chinese travel retail produced both the boom to 2021 and the collapse in earnings after it. Readers get the gift-with-purchase tactic Estee Lauder invented, the counter-level sales model, and the discipline of buying founder brands and scaling them. The literature is thin on operations: Lee Israel wrote an unauthorised biography, Leonard Lauder wrote his own account of running the company, and Geoffrey Jones supplies the academic history of the industry around it.

Lee Israel · 1985

Unauthorised; Lauder rushed out her own memoir to pre-empt it.

Geoffrey Jones · 2010

Harvard business historian; sets her brand-building against the whole industry.

Leonard A. Lauder · 2020

Insider memoir by her son, who scaled the company she founded.
