Chris Baker

British historian based in Bangkok who co-writes Thailand's economic and political histories with Pasuk Phongpaichit and translates classical Thai literature.

A History of Thailand supplies the long narrative - monarchy, bureaucracy, Chinese business families, the army - that the boom-and-bust and Thaksin books then use to explain the 1997 crisis and the politics after it. The pairing produces an economic account anchored in who actually holds power.
