The best books on Classic economic thought and economists 25

John Maynard Keynes · 1919
Written before the fact by a Treasury insider; the reparations arithmetic that set up the collapse.
Janek Wasserman · 2019
History of the Vienna school as a network, including its financing and its export to the US.
F. A. Hayek
Hayek's 1944 warning that central economic planning corrodes political freedom alongside economic efficiency. Written for a British Left audience, it argued that the path to socialism and the path to fascism share structural features. Its critics say it proves too much; its admirers say history vindicated it.
“Hayek's argument that central planning inevitably concentrates power is a bedrock text in Andreessen's political economy. He has referenced it repeatedly to explain his skepticism of regulatory overreach in tech, particularly around cryptocurrency, speech platforms, and AI governance.”Marc Andreessen
Adam Smith · 1776
The origin point. Smith's argument that specialization and voluntary exchange create wealth still underlies most of what follows. Often misread as a simple endorsement of greed; actually a nuanced account of how self-interest, constrained by competition and moral sympathy, tends toward social benefit.
“Smith's foundational account of how free markets generate prosperity is in Dalio's background reading for understanding what conditions produce long economic expansions. He returns to it as a baseline against which mercantilist and nationalist deviations stand out.”Ray Dalio
Thomas Robert Malthus · 1798
The original population-versus-resources argument that still frames the debate
Recommended byMohnish Pabrai
Karl Marx · 1867
Recommended byElon Musk
Ludwig von Mises · 1949
Recommended byCharles Koch
Philip Mirowski · 1989
How economics borrowed physics metaphors, and what that cost it
“there's a wonderful book called More Heat Than Light by a professor named Phil Mirowski, which documents how economists mapped over equations from Newtonian physics”Michael Mauboussin
Hunter Lewis · 2009
Polemic against Keynesian policy from an Austrian-leaning investor
“This is another timely classic given the present condition. The outline structure of the book is brilliant.”Christopher Bloomstran
