Corporate Culture

Every company rewards particular behaviours in practice, and the pattern shows in who gets promoted, what conduct is tolerated, and how people decide when no rule covers the situation. Reading this literature is useful when it describes mechanisms rather than values: Pixar's Braintrust, where notes carry no authority over the director, Netflix's top-of-market pay with a keeper test and no vacation policy, Semco's employee-set salaries and open books, and Nucor's production bonuses paid weekly under four layers of management. Kotter and Heskett supply the empirical link between culture and long-run financial performance across more than two hundred firms, and Coyle assembles the research on the small signals that make people cooperate. Read the founder accounts alongside them, since each describes a system that suited one business and one labour market.
